scabies (n.) skin disease, c.1400, from L. scabies "mange, itch," from scabere "to scratch," from PIE root *skab- "to scrape, scratch" (Cf. Goth. scaban, O.E. sceafan "to scrape, shave;" O.C.S. skobli "scraper;" Lith. skabus "sharp," skabeti "to cut;" Lettish skabrs "splintery, sharp").
