retroactive (adj.) 1610s, from Fr. rétroactif (fem. rétroactive) "casting or relating back," from L. retroactus, pp. of retroagere "drive or turn back," from retro- "back" (see RETRO- (Cf. retro-)) + agere "to drive, set in motion" (see ACT (Cf. act)).
