requiescat "name of a prayer for the repose of the dead," 1824, from L. phrase requiescat in pace (often abbreviated R.I.P.), lit. "may he begin to rest in peace," from inceptive of requies "rest, repose" (see REQUIEM (Cf. requiem)).
