puberty (n.) "the time of life in which the two sexes begin first to be acquainted" [Johnson], late 14c., from O.Fr. puberté, from L. pubertatem (nom. pubertas) "age of maturity, manhood," from pubes (gen. pubertis) "adult, full-grown, manly."
