prefiguration late 14c., from L.L. praefigurationem (nom. praefiguratio), c.400, noun of action from praefigurare "to prefigure," from L. prae "before" (see PRE- (Cf. pre-)) + figurare "to form, shape" (see FIGURE (Cf. figure)).
