pleiotropy 1939, from Ger. pleiotrop, from Gk. pleion “greater in quantity, the more part, very many,” comp. of polys "much," from PIE *ple- (see POLY- (Cf. poly-)) + trope “turn, turning” (see TROPE (Cf. trope)). Related: Pleiotropic.
