obscurity (n.) late 15c., "absence of light;" 1610s with meaning "condition of being unknown;" from OBSCURE (Cf. obscure) (adj.) + -ITY (Cf. -ity); or else from O.Fr. obscurite, from L. obscuritatem (nom. obscuritas) "darkness, indistinctness, uncertainty," from obscurus.
