obesity (n.) 1610s, from Fr. obésité or directly from L. obesitas "fatness, corpulence," from obesus "that has eaten itself fat," pp. of obdere "to eat all over, devour," from ob "over" (see OB- (Cf. ob-)) + edere "eat" (see EDIBLE (Cf. edible)).
