mysterious (adj.) 1610s, "full of mystery," from L. mysterium (see MYSTERY (Cf. mystery) (1)) + -OUS (Cf. -ous). Related: Mysteriously; mysteriousness. Earlier in same sense was mysterial (early 15c.), from L.L. mysterialis.
