merestone

merestone
merestone (n.) "stone serving as a landmark," O.E. mærstan "boundary stone," from mære "boundary, object indicating a boundary," from P.Gmc. *mairjo- (Cf. M.Du. mere "boundary mark, stake," O.N. -mæri "boundary, border-land"), related to L. murus "wall" (see MURAL (Cf. mural)). Hence also meresman "man appointed to find boundaries" (of a parish, etc.).
