megaphone

megaphone
megaphone (n.) 1878, coined (perhaps by Thomas Edison, who invented it) from Gk. megas "great" (see MEGA- (Cf. mega-)) + phone "voice" (see FAME (Cf. fame) (n.)). Related: Megaphonic. In Greek, megalophonia meant "grandiloquence," megalophonos "loud-voiced."
