maulstick

maulstick
maulstick "light stick used by painters to support the painting hand," 1650s, from Du. maalstok, lit. "painting stick," from mallen "to paint," from P.Gmc. *mal- (Cf. O.N. mæla, O.H.G. malon "trace, draw, paint," Ger. malen "to paint"), from mal "spot, mark, stain," perhaps from the same root as Gk. melas "black" (see MELANIN (Cf. melanin)), but the original sense is not color but marking. With stock "stick" (see STOCK (Cf. stock) (n.1)).
