{{11}}marvel (n.) c.1300, "miracle," also "wonderful story or legend," from O.Fr. merveille "a wonder, surprise, miracle," from V.L. *miribilia (also source of Sp. maravilla, Port. maravilha, It. maraviglia), altered from L. mirabilia "wonderful things," from neuter plural of mirabilis "wonderful, marvelous, extraordinary; strange, singular," from mirari "to wonder at," from mirus "wonderful" (see SMILE (Cf. smile)). A neuter plural treated in V.L. as a feminine singular. Related: Marvels.
