intrepid 1620s (implied in intrepidness), from Fr. intrépide (16c.) and directly from L. intrepidus "unshaken, undaunted," from in- "not" (see IN- (Cf. in-) (1)) + trepidus "alarmed" (see TREPIDATION (Cf. trepidation)). Related: Intrepidly.
