illicit (adj.) c.1500, from O.Fr. illicite (14c.) "unlawful, forbidden," from L. illicitus "not allowed, unlawful, illegal," from assimilated form of in- "not, opposite of" (see IN- (Cf. in-) (1)) + licitus "lawful," pp. of licere "to be allowed" (see LICENCE (Cf. licence)). Related: Illicitly.
