hepatic (adj.) late 14c., epatike, from O.Fr. hepatique or directly from L. hepaticus “pertaining to the liver,” from Gk. hepatikos, from hepar (gen. hepatos) “liver” (see HEPATITIS (Cf. hepatitis)). As a noun, "medicine for the liver," from late 15c.
