{{12}}gulp (v.) late 14c., a native coinage or else from Flemish gulpe or Du. gulpen "to gush, pour forth, guzzle, swallow," in any case possibly of imitative origin (Cf. Swed. dialectal glapa "to gulp down"). Related: Gulped; gulping.
