grotto

grotto
grotto 1610s, from It. grotta, ultimately from L. crypta "vault, cavern," from Gk. krypte "hidden place" (see CRYPT (Cf. crypt)). Terminal -o may be from its being spelled that way in many translations of Dante's "Divine Comedy."
