glaucoma 1640s, from Gk. glaukoma "cataract, opacity of the lens" (cataracts and glaucoma not distinguished until c.1705), from -OMA (Cf. -oma) + glaukos, an adj. of uncertain origin (see GLAUCOUS (Cf. glaucous)).
