genuflection early 15c., from M.Fr. génuflexion and directly from L.L. genuflectionem (nom. genuflexio) "bending of the knee," noun of action from pp. stem of genuflectere "genuflect," from L. genu "knee" (see KNEE (Cf. knee)) + flectere "to bend."
