gallantry 1590s, "fine appearance," from Fr. galanterie (16c.), from O.Fr. galant (see GALLANT (Cf. gallant)). Meaning "gallant behavior" is from 1630s. Middle English had gallantness "merriment, gaiety, high living" (late 15c.).
