Grallatores wading birds, Modern Latin, from L. grallotores "stilt-walkers," pl. of grallator, from grallae "stilts," ultimately from stem of gradi "to walk, go" (see GRADE (Cf. grade) (n.)). Related: Grallatorial (1835).
