foyer 1859, from Fr. foyer "green room, room for actors when not on stage," lit. "fireplace," from O.Fr. foier "furnace, stove, hearth, fireplace" (12c.), from L. focarium, noun use of neut. of adj. focarius "having to do with the hearth," from focus "hearth, fireplace" (see FOCUS (Cf. focus)).
