expugn early 15c., "eradicate, exterminate," also "conquer, defeat," from O.Fr. expugner, from L. expugnare "to take by assault, storm, capture," from ex- (see EX- (Cf. ex-)) + pugnare "to fight" (see PUGNACIOUS (Cf. pugnacious)). Related: Expugned.
