epileptic c.1600 (adj.); 1650s (n.), from Fr. épileptique, from L.L. epilepticus, from Gk. epileptikos, from epilambanein (see EPILEPSY (Cf. epilepsy)). Earlier adjective was epilentic (late 14c.), from a Greek variant.
