enervation early 15c., from M.Fr. énervation, from L.L. enervationem (nom. enervatio), from pp. stem of L. enervare "weaken," lit. "cut the sinews of," from ex- "out" (see EX- (Cf. ex-)) + nervus "sinew" (see NERVE (Cf. nerve)). Figurative sense is from 1550s.
