Ezra masc. proper name, in O.T. name of a celebrated 5c. B.C.E. scribe, from Late Latin, from Heb. Ezra, contraction of Azaryah(u), lit. "God has helped," from ezer "help" + Yah, a shortened form of Yahweh "God."
