educator 1560s, "one who nourishes or rears;" 1670s, "one who trains or instructs," from L. educator (in classical Latin, "a foster father" as well as "a tutor"), agent noun from pp. stem of educare (see EDUCATE (Cf. educate)). Latin educatrix meant "a nurse."
