dissolute (adj.) late 14c., "loose, negligent, morally or religiously lax," from L. dissolutus "loose, disconnected," pp. of dissolvere "loosen up" (see DISSOLVE (Cf. dissolve)). A figurative use of the classical Latin word. Related: Dissolutely; dissoluteness.
