dishabille 1670s, from Fr. déshabillé (17c.), noun use of pp. of déshabiller "to undress" (oneself), from des- (see DIS- (Cf. dis-)) + habiller "to dress," originally "prepare, arrange" (see HABIT (Cf. habit)).
