deploy 1786 as a military word, from Fr. déployer "unroll, unfold," from O.Fr. desploiier "unfold," from L. displicare "unfold, scatter," from dis- (see DIS- (Cf. dis-)) + plicare "to fold" see PLY (Cf. ply) (v.)). "In its AFr. form regularly adopted in ME as desplay" [OED]. Related: Deployed; deploying.
