cuspidor (n.) 1779, a colonial word, from Port. cuspidor "spittoon," from cuspir "to spit," from L. conspuere "spit on," from com-, intensive prefix (see COM- (Cf. com-)), + spuere "to spit" (see SPEW (Cf. spew)).
