cranny

cranny
cranny mid-15c., possibly from a dim. of M.Fr. cran "notch, fissure" (14c.), from crener "to notch, split," from M.L. crenare, possibly from L. cernere "to separate, sift" (see CRISIS (Cf. crisis)). But OED casts doubt on this derivation.
