cram O.E. crammian "press something into something else," from P.Gmc. *kram-/*krem- (Cf. O.H.G. krimman "to press, pinch," O.N. kremja "to squeeze, pinch"), from PIE root *ger- "to gather" (Cf. Skt. gramah "heap, troop," O.C.S. gramota "heap," L. gremium "bosom, lap"). Meaning "study intensely for an exam" is British student slang first recorded 1803. Related: Crammed; cramming.
