concise 1580s, from L. concisus "cut off, brief," pp. of concidere "to cut off, cut up, cut through, cut to pieces," from com-, intensive prefix (see COM- (Cf. com-)), + caedere "to cut" (see -CIDE (Cf. -cide)).
