comprehensible 1520s, "able to be contained," from L. comprehensibilis, from comprehensus, pp. of comphrehendere (see COMPREHEND (Cf. comprehend)). Meaning "able to be understood" is from c.1600. Related: Comprehensibly; comprehensibility.
