commutation mid-15c., from O.Fr. commutacion "change, transformation, exchange, barter" (13c., Mod.Fr. commutation), from L. commutationem (nom. commutatio) "a change, alteration," noun of action from commutare "to change, alter entirely" (see COMMUTE (Cf. commute)).
