chic

chic
chic 1856, from Fr. chic, 19c. in "stylishness" sense, originally "subtlety" (16c.), perhaps related to Ger. Schick "tact, skill," from M.L.G. schikken "arrange appropriately," or M.H.G. schicken "to arrange, set in order;" or from Fr. chicane, from chicanerie (see CHICANERY (Cf. chicanery)).
