arson

arson
arson (n.) 1670s, from Anglo-Fr. arsoun (late 13c.), O.Fr. arsion, from L.L. arsionem (nom. arsio) "a burning," noun of action from pp. stem of L. ardere "to burn," from PIE root *as- "to burn, glow" (see ASH (Cf. ash) (1)). The Old English term was bærnet, lit. "burning;" and Coke has indictment of burning (1640).
