alone c.1300 contraction of all ane, from O.E. all ana "unaccompanied, all by oneself," from all "all, wholly" (see ALL (Cf. all)) + an "one" (see ONE (Cf. one)). Similar compounds are found in German (allein) and Dutch (alleen).
