quart (n.) early 14c., "one-fourth of a gallon," from O.Fr. quarte "a fourth part" (13c.), from L. quarta (pars), from fem. of quartus "fourth," related to quattuor "four," from PIE root *kewtwor- (see FOUR (Cf. four)).
