oration (n.) late 14c., "prayer," from L.L. orationem (nom. oratio) "speaking, discourse, language, prayer," noun of action from pp. stem of L. orare (see ORATOR (Cf. orator)). Meaning "formal speech, discourse" first recorded c.1500.
