kriegspiel

kriegspiel
kriegspiel (n.) war games played with pieces on maps, 1811 as a German word in English, from Ger. Kriegsspiel, lit. "war game," from Krieg "war," from M.H.G. kriec, "combat," mostly "exertion, effort; opposition, enmity, resistance," from O.H.G. chreg "stubbornness, defiance, obsinancy," probably cognate with Gk. hybris "violence" (see HUBRIS (Cf. hubris); Cf. also WAR (Cf. war)). For second element, see SPIEL (Cf. spiel) (n.). Introduced 1870s as officer training in British army.
