guile mid-12c., from O.Fr. guile "deceit, wile, fraud, ruse, trickery," from Frankish *wigila "trick, ruse" or a related Germanic source (Cf. O.Fris. wigila "sorcery, witchcraft," O.E. wil "trick;" see WILE (Cf. wile)).
