evangelism 1620s, from EVANGEL (Cf. evangel) + -ISM (Cf. -ism), or else from M.L. evangelismus "a spreading of the Gospel," from L.L. evangelium "good news, gospel," from Gk. euangelion (see EVANGELIST (Cf. evangelist)). In reference to evangelical Protestantism, from 1812.
