envious c.1300, from Anglo-Fr. envious, O.Fr. envieus (13c.), earlier envidius (12c., Mod.Fr. envieux), from L. invidiosus "full of envy" (Cf. Sp. envidioso, It. invidioso, Port. invejoso), from invidia (see ENVY (Cf. envy)). Related: Enviously; enviousness.
